this is what I am about
I like what Steve says in the middle of this new chorus. check it out.
May it be so oh God!
Out break!
Every Saturday morning my wife and I go out for breakfast, usually with our friends, Greg and Debbie. Greg just sent me this news link concerning the restaurant we go to. This past weekend for some reason we went to a different breakfast joint. Good thing.
A popular Burlington eatery has been temporarily closed after several cases of E.coli were linked to it.
"Johnathan's Family Restaurant" closed its doors after the health department was called in to investigate four complaints and a fifth is being probed.
The Toronto Star reports inspectors found a problem with the temperature of the pizza fridge and found that thermometers were missing from several other fridges.
In addition, questions were raised about the cleanliness of drawers and the use of old cans and plastic pails.
Food samples were taken away so that the source of the E.coli can be determined.
The restaurant will remain closed until the inspection process is complete.

Sunday's a comin'
On Sunday night my friend Andy Sherlock is leading the young adults in a night of worship. Andy and I go way back, back farther then the Tupac vs. Biggie Controversy. I am looking forward to coming and worshiping. I am so thankful for Andy and the team of worshipper in Oakville, and their desire to use their gifts. Andy is one of those guys who is great at everything. He can play the drums, bass, electric, piano, mix sound, produce, write (not all at the same time). He came at the right time and is doing great things at our church for the A/V ministry, and now, I get to be lead in worship by him. He is growing and has grown so much since coming to Oakville and I look forward to having him come in my office tomorrow and saying in his bashful way, "thanks for the kind post", in which I would say, "I'm not writing it for you Andy, I'm writing it because I am encouraged by your growth and where God is leading you!"Anyways, between 18- 30? Free Sunday night at 7:00pm? Come to the worship center! Come to meet Jesus!
Acid // Worship: The two have nothing to do with each other
In other news, Andy, Greg and I did the ole' listen to the mix in the car (or in this case a van) to see how the mixes are coming along and we are really happy with them. I finally figured out melodyne for some vocal touch ups, so the process is almost done. We track 4 piano parts and 2 more electrics tomorrow for 3 songs and then we are done. Next is the art work, and then 2 weeks to press them. I know this is a real low budget, low hype live album (I mean we are not anticipating massive sales, just a resource for our church), but I really am getting a sense that God is in this, He wants to use this. Friends from Chicago prayed one time before we recorded the lift up the name album, "God, you don't need another worship album", and they are right, but I believe he will never turn one away, and so we are praying this sparks praise in cars and living rooms for soley HIS GLORY!
Background:
Back in September, we had a night of worship, highlighting the 11 most sung songs in our church or those that sparked the theme "stand in awe". The night was powerful, the testimonies we so great to hear God at work that we decided to remember that night in the form of a live worship album available for our church. We recorded everything and then prayed nothing went wrong. All in all we had some great stuff to work with and so began to mix and re-track parts in efforts to release our churches first ever worship album. the songs were specifically those which our church called their "own". Songs like "Lord of all", "stand in Awe" and "Stronger". Themes of God exalted, and us, standing in awe. Now, a couple months later, we are close to finishing the project and sending it to be pressed. The way I look at all this is merely a church in Oakville, ON, Canada who loves to praise the Lord, and wanted to remeber a special night and possible use the album as a great lead in to some Godley conversation and possible salvation.

How many Canadians does it take to mix a live worship album?
Depends on how many have done it before.
We've been working hard on this live worship album for our church and so far we have kept it really under budget. We have done everything in house and are really happy with the results.
Today and Thursday we'll be mixing in a room with about 6 ears so we're sure to have something at least 3 people think is good.

Worship Ministry Highlight #1
This is Greg McKay. (Ma-Ka-i)Greg is one of the electric guitar players at Harvest who for the past 7 months has been playing a very key role in our worship ministry by playing 3 services, every weekend. His heart for worship and seeing God use his gifts is evident and so is his humility, which is why the two are so evident.
Greg is young, but admits He doesn't know everything and needs people to come around him and help him in understanding what a Christian and a person in ministry looks like from a Biblical perspective. Guys like Greg (and the dozens of other worship team members who God has been gripping) makes my job one of the most rewarding things this side of Heaven. I am thankful to have been able to have had many conversations, many jam sessions and rehearsals with this guy and see him grow.
Greg has recently helped me, and been moved into a more larger role of leadership by leading the music at our Young Adults ministry to give me more time to focus on the adult weekend services and my wife. His ability to play and sing has grown rapidly over the past 2 years that I have known him and his desire to write songs for the church is growing as well.
What I like about Greg is:
- He's naturally gifted at guitar and wants to use it for God
- He doesn't come from a Christian background and is eager to know God more everyday
- He asks questions and seeks counsel in all areas of his life
- He is committed to the ministry of HBC, not the music of HBC
- He's willing to move aside for someone else to be used too
- He's on time, prepared and approachable in rehearsal
- He's got a great sense of humor and treats his friends with respect and loyality
- He knows that with out God, he will fail, 100% of the time.
some peoples children.....are awesome!

The next picture is of the magically princess Kristana. She is the smartest, wittiest, funniest girl I have ever met. She calls me "uncle Joshua" which sounds funny every time I hear it. We are tight. That is here (the flash of lighting) as she bounces off one wall onto another!). She had 6 cups of coffee and a red bull.

Weekend Review
I just got ready for bed, which I'm not sure why because I am not tired--though I was exhausted at about 5 pm today and wanted to nap, but didn't because we were at our small group reunion party-more to come on that in a sec. This weekend was our last weekend in our "Don't give up" series. I have been so thankful for how God has faithfully met with us for the past 4 weeks in different ways. The message is true and a needed reminder for people who feel like literally giving up, throwing in the towel and saying "I quit" to God. I think a lot of people feel that way most or some of the time, mainly due to different circumstances they have to face, but I was encouraged today in our "worship team 9am devotional discussion" (that should be all one word) that a lot of the time we try and maneuver around the trials instead of just go at them WITH God, trusting He knows best, and its for our best. These past few years have been a lot of blessing, but believe when I say I have been through the valley, I have been there in a place where I literally told the Lord I wanted to give up, maybe it was theriputic to say it, but in hinesight, it got me no where.
Our Pastor told us today that faith never gives up. Which to many sounds simple enough, but to truly believe that and live that is powerful. To believe so much in the things unseen and set our eyes on the hope in which is to come is truly where we will find our rest. Sounds funny to think that we can have peace in chaos, but God never promised our walks to be easy (no he didn't Joel Osteen). (John 15:20)
All that to say, I am literally begining to be as bold to ask God for trials, for valleys, for chances to perserver and deepen my faith. Why? Because I believe that they make me more like Christ. That through hard times I will be forced to rely on Christ more, I will be forced to trust, to believe and hold God to his promises (that are eternal).
NEW:
- We had a few new factors this weekend: the main one was the new chairs that we recently put in our worship center. We gained alot more seating and it totally changed the enviorment from moth ball to mento's. Woo hoo!
- The sound changed dramatically too (go figure). We have a great sound tech on staff who knows what he is doing but adding the chairs softened the reverbaration of the room and allowed for a larger, more deep sound from the front. Woo Hoo!
- We also moved our camera's from the floor to two side rooms off the balcony. I call them the sniper towers! (I just came up with that name now). But again, the once before distracting camera shots with drums, keyboards, guitar amps in the background are now gone. The camera have a way better angle and the shots today were crispy. Just the way we like em.
- This was the 2nd weekend we did announcments at the beginning of the service. We had to commission the chairs (just kidding). this really helps because instead of pausing in the middle of the worship set for announcements, we just get them out of the way at the beginning. the only downer about this is the latecomers don't get to hear the upcoming events. We try and make up for that though by having the same announcements in the rolling announcements pre and post service.
How Great Thou Art (Baloche version)
I will give you all my worship
Not a god (You are God alone)
Revelation Song
We had John Mc (elder) come up and pray a powerful prayer this morning before the offering which flowed seemlessly from the worship keeping people's hearts focused).
I set up a medley I worked out this past week: The idea was really that God alot of times takes simple lyrics to songs and allows believers to truley beging to sing them as prayers back to God. The power in that is our worship begins solely on exalting Christ for all He has done and softens our heart to the reminder of all that he promises.

At the end of all three services Pastor Robbie extended an invitation for anyone who God was speaking to and our revealing himself to them to wait around and come pray. I heard of one couple that came to the Saturday night service, were broken and needed to come back again today to figure out what God was really doing in their lives. I love stories like this and I pray that they both found salvation this weekend from Christ alone!

Christmas planning meetings
1 Cor 14:25 says, "the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, falling to his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you."
What that means for planning is that even if we just opened the doors, we pray our hearts and lives shine Christ bright enough that people would sense the Lord at work with out a special song or media component. It's a high bar, one that is seldom reached, but the intent and desire is that alone. Lord, may it be so.

free music
I found this site through Tim Challies. Lots of great music for free, all you have to do is tell 5 friends via email. Check it out HERE
What I learned at today's Lunch and Learn
Here's what I learned.
- Don't answer all your Inbox messages all at once. Bad priority sequence.
- use your calender. block off time you need to get stuff done, so you know what you're suppose to be doing if other things become a distraction
- don't let email master you
- color code your calender...then write down your priorities apart from your calender....then look at your calender compared to your priority list and see if that is how you are living.
- include drive time for off site events or meetings. (especially if your tendency is to be late)
- turn off the automatic email notifier: it's code for EMAIL RUNS MY LIFE
- if you want an answer now. use the phone or walk to the persons office.
- if you want an answer in 24 hours. email them.
- Create Subject Headings: Action Required, Urgent, Important, FYI i.e. Action Required: Party for Pastor Bob, pls. respond
- FYI means you don't have to do anything, Im just letting you know, don't expect a email response.

I heard my child's heart beat today
The Shack
The other night the book "the shack" came up again in a dinner conversation. I had just spoke with a friend who had the author of the shack visit his church and share with the staff and elders concerning his book. This got me thinking, and so again today, a gentlemen brought me a mp3 of Al Molher's radio show where he gives his insight on the book from a Biblical perspective. After listening to this program, I would not recommend this book to a new Christian or someone who is not able to discern right or wrong Biblical Doctrine. It is dangerous language really, and not something to take lightly. Sadly, millions of people, have bought and read this book, and have been subjected to un-Biblical teachings and conversation that goes against scripture in many ways, how is that ever a good or healing thing?
Listen to the below message. Al has some wise insight, points that can not be argued because they are simply based on Scripture.

Weekend Review
I'm about to go to bed but I wanted to post our weekend service. My Senior pastor gave me the opportunity to do a small devotional to hopefully grow my ability to pull apart the text to help me understand worship better. I used Ephesians 1:17-19. I was nervous, but I wrote out exactly what I wanted to say, and think it went ok.I am really, really excited for next weekend, we are going to try something we've never done before and I am praying with faith that it leaves a HUGE impact on the congregation. More to come.
Opening Set:
Open the Eyes of My Heart
Your Name
Baby Dedications/Announcements/Prayer/Offering
New Song: Open our Eyes (this is the song I re-wrote, changed the chorus and with the band adding their individual components, I am really happy with how the song turned out and was received.) I'll post the video this week of the final outcome.

Taylor came through
My Taylor 815ce recently began to "buzz" only when I strummed a chords so I did all I could to check it over but was forced to send it to Taylor's only licensed service guy "Al Clegg" to fix the problem. What seems to be the problem is the expression system under the saddle might have lossened and thus vibrates when I stum the guitar. The beauty in it all is that when I took it to my local guitar shop to ship it to them, because they are a Taylor dealer, they told me I could take any other Brand new Taylor off their wall for loaner until mine was fixed. I couldn't believe it. Thankfully a Taylor 814ce (a little smaller and with the regular cut away, but same woods) was hanging there and so is now my "loaner" until it's back.
Thanks to Taylor for standing behind their guitars and not leaving a musician high and dry if something goes wrong.
Vicki and Bluetree Debrief
With that said, it was a very "up close and personal" show. Vicki opened with "yesterday, today and forever" and the band all looked very rock and roll. The highlight of Vicki's set was her last song, which is an original hynm she wrote called "I will never loose the wonder of the Cross"
Video HERE
Up next was Bluetree. They were pretty crazy, I get what they were trying to do, but there music is all pretty serious lyrically, so it was hard to know whether to worship or watch. They covered "Enemies Camp" (a Jr. High song) and "Shine Jesus Shine". I was attracted to the bands humility and desire to just sing the songs with passion and point people to Jesus. No mention of their song "God of the City" which Tomlin released as a cover and helped making the band name known.
This is the second christian concert where they have used "Pro Presentor" for their visuals and backgrounds and it failed. The first was Starfielf and Shane and Shane. The lyrics and backgrounds were up then down, then no signal, then signal....to say the least it was distracting and caused me to feel really bad for them all. At one point the pro presentor logo went up on all the screen proudly communicating the problemed software. :)
The other highlight was getting a chance to catch up with this guy and here some great stories about what he and his church has been up to over the past few months. Even though he sneaked out before I got a chance to really say good bye (proably left when the backyard fireworks started going off on stage during bluetree's set).

Recomended Readings
"In the Name of Jesus" by Henri Nouwen and "Five Smooth Stones for Pastoral work" by Eugene H. Peterson. They just arrived today and I'm going to crack one open tonight after the Bluetree Concert. He said they were monumental in shaping his view of God and I look forward to reading them both.

These teachings on worship fire me up, get my mind and heart on the things of the Lord and continue to shape my heart for worship and leading God's people.

Weekend Review
Another weekend, but not just any weekend. This is thanksgiving weekend in Canada. I don't know why we celebrate thanksgiving before the US but I'm pretty sure its just because we can't wait until November to eat a turkey. Anyways, its been a really busy weekend. On Saturday I got the privileged to sing at our friends Nick and Amanda's wedding, then we hung around for worship rehearsal and then our Saturday night worship service. Robbie said alot of things that made me think, it was so good. He said "when you're broken, you are beautiful, when you are not, you are ugly". I want to be broken, I want to be beautiful......reflecting the Lord's beauty! After the service we went back to the wedding....and we danced.
There is nothing funnier then your church elders, pastors and friends rocking out to the disco beats. The DJ's name was "DJ Peter P", what a great name Mr. DJ.
After I broke a sweat on the dance floor, its was time to go home and sleep.
I had a great sleep, but the morning came early.....
So we just finished the 9am service, and I am loosing my voice. I don't really need it, our congregation loves to sing, so I can pretty much just start the song, and then they'll take over!
Here is our set. We are introducing some new musicians to our worship team this weekend, which is a struggle (in a good way), it stretches me because when I am used to the same musicians on many weekends, you begin to "gel" with each other and play tighter, these types of things come with time (and that's why its a good thing), and new members can serve and use there gifts in the church for the Lord. The guys are so talented and I am thankful for their desire to play here, to use their gifts for God and I look forward to more weekends together.
Mighty to SaveAfter the 11 service, Erin and I are headed to Brigden for thanksgiving to spend the next 2 days with my side of the family. On Monday we're hitting on the legendary Brigden Fair. Woo hoo!

new song
original lyrics HERE
here are my lyics.
Earthly vessels, marred, unsightly
Bearing wealth no thought can know
Heav’nly Treasure, gleaming brightly
Christ Revealed in Saints below
Vessels, broken, frail, yet bearing
Through the hungry ages on
Riches giv’n with hand unsparing
God’s great Gift, His precious son
You took our shame, You bore our blame,
we are your children O God
We are the free, you have redeemed,
Oh how we love you O God
O to be but Empty, Lower
Mean, unnoticed and unknown
And to God a vessel holy
Filled with Christ, and Christ Alone
Naught of earth to cloud the Glory
Naught of self, the light to dim!
Telling forth Christ’s wondrous story
Broken, Empty- Filled with Him
You took our shame, you bore our blame,
we are your children O God
We are the free, you have redeemed,
Oh how we love you O God
Come break our hearts, so we can be an offering
Come break our hearts, so we can be
Come break our hearts, so we can be an offering
Come break our hearts, so the world we see

I know somebody important.
My site tracker (so vain) is telling me that this guy is the number one referral to my blog. Which means, people go to his blog, click the link to my blog and then come over to mine for a visit. Thanks Derry for the traffic, and for the nice people who come for a visit from Derry's Blog. Derry just had a birthday, happy birthday Derry. You are Loved.
nothing says I love you like "Tastey U's"
This place is classic. The waiter knows me by name (I'm a regular) and always says "where's your wife". The best is the chicken on a stick. Its literally the best thing I've ever eaten in my entire life. It's probably cat, but I don't care, as long as the sign "says" chicken, Im going to keep eating it.
words from Riddle
This is friend Jeremy Riddle, a worshiper of God and song writer for the church. He writes songs like I've never heard before, and lives a life, from what I know, that is the real deal. His closeness to God spurs me to a greater desire for intimacy and experience with my maker and encourages me to become more transparent in my song writing sit downs.

my brain is fried.
Anyways, you've been there, the place where your just not in the best mood when you wake up.
which is not common for me, I'm usually in a good place when I wake up, but not today.
Grant gave me a ride to the church, and when I got in the car I told him, "I hate the cold" and his response was classic, "Joshua, you must see the cold as a gift from God, seasons change for reasons, we must glorify God in all things..." what do you say to that? ...amen?
So I got to my desk, sat down, pulled out my lime green sharpie and made my to do list (which I have found really helps because I can scribble out the to do's when I finish them.)
today I had about 9 to do's and for the most part, got the 9 done. BUT, and this is where I think the cold comes in, I forgot a bunch of to do's and so have been up tonight working on a lot of them. The ability to be creative is credited to my wifes amazing dinner. We had tuna melts.....
Step 1: Open a can of tuna
Step 2: Put it in a bowl and stir in alot of miracle whip
Step 3: Turn on the over to broil hi
Stpe 4: Spread the tuna on a english muffin
Step 5: put the english muffins on a try and in the over
Step 6: turn the oven light on and watch the tuna melt.
yummmmm.
Im going to bed now. Looking forward to tomorrow.
meet me by the blue tree

sleep?
The baby hasn't even come yet and I am already not sleeping well. For the past 3 nights I have been up, tossing and turning, throwing elbows at Erin and for no apparent reason. I have purposely not drank any coffee yesterday to see if it would help, but to no avail. Good things Karl (who is in the office next to me) has got his Christian rap cranked to 11.
